Overview

About Nyerere National Park

Nyerere National Park — formerly the Selous Game Reserve — is part of Africa's largest protected area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site spanning nearly 50,000 square kilometres. Unlike the northern circuit parks, Nyerere offers a truly off-the-beaten-path safari experience with few crowds. The Rufiji River and its network of lakes and channels are the heart of the ecosystem, supporting an extraordinary concentration of wildlife including the largest hippo population in Africa. Game-viewing here goes beyond the vehicle — boat safaris, walking safaris, and fly camping are all available.

Best Time to Visit

June–October is the prime dry season with excellent wildlife viewing. November–May is lush and green with lower visitor numbers.
